How to Care for Handmade Jute, Bamboo and Cotton Crafts

Natural materials are forgiving in some ways and not in others. A crochet keychain will shrug off years of use in a bag; a jute basket left wet on a bathroom floor will not. The good news is that care for handmade natural-material pieces comes down to a small set of habits, not a long list of rules.

This is written for the materials we actually work with — cotton yarn crochet, coiled grass fiber and jute, bamboo, and cotton macrame — so treat it as a practical reference rather than general advice copied from somewhere else.

The one rule that matters most: keep it dry

Almost every care problem in natural-material crafts traces back to moisture. Jute, natural grass fiber and cotton cord all absorb water readily, and once they are wet they are slow to dry all the way through — which is exactly the condition mould and mildew need.

Bamboo behaves differently but is not immune: standing water left inside a bamboo mug or bottle can dull the finish and, over a long time, encourage staining. None of these materials are designed to be soaked, so treat "keep dry" as the baseline rule for the whole collection.

Crochet cotton pieces — keychains, dolls, the baby bag

Cotton yarn crochet is the easiest material in the collection to live with. For everyday dust and light dirt, a dry, soft brush or a lightly damp cloth is usually enough. If a piece genuinely needs a deeper clean, hand wash gently in cool water with a mild soap, squeeze — never wring — the excess water out, and reshape the piece while it is still damp.

Dry it flat, away from direct sun, rather than hanging it. Hanging a wet crochet piece stretches the stitches under its own weight, and that stretch does not fully recover once the piece dries.

Jute and natural grass fiber — storage baskets, woven trays, animal figures

These pieces are made to be handled and used, not babied, but they should never be soaked or left somewhere damp. Wipe down with a dry or barely damp cloth, and let any dampness air dry completely before the piece goes back into a cupboard or storage space.

If a jute or grass-fiber piece is used for storage — laundry, toys, general clutter — keep the contents dry too. A basket holding damp laundry for an extended period will pick up moisture from the inside, which defeats the point of wiping the outside.

Bamboo — the water bottle, the mug, basket sets

Bamboo homeware should be washed by hand with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap, then dried promptly rather than left to air dry slowly with water pooled anywhere on the surface. Avoid dishwashers, and avoid leaving a bamboo bottle or mug filled with liquid for extended periods, since prolonged contact with moisture is what eventually dulls the natural finish.

A light coat of food-safe mineral oil, wiped on occasionally and buffed off, will keep the surface looking fresh if it starts to look dry — the same basic care bamboo kitchenware generally benefits from.

Macrame cotton cord and wood — the wall hanging

A macrame wall hanging is mostly a dusting job. A soft brush or a gentle shake outdoors removes most accumulated dust. If the cord needs a deeper clean, spot clean with a barely damp cloth rather than washing the whole piece, since the wooden dowel and shelf should not be soaked.

Hang it somewhere out of strong, direct sunlight for long periods — cotton cord and wood both fade and can become brittle with prolonged UV exposure, well before the piece is otherwise worn out.

Storage between uses

When a piece is not on display or in use, store it somewhere dry and out of direct sun, ideally loose rather than tightly compressed under other items. Natural fiber pieces in particular hold their shape better when they are not squashed flat in storage for long stretches.

If in doubt about a specific piece, ask before you clean it. A two-line WhatsApp message with a photo gets you a specific answer faster than guessing — and it costs nothing.

Where we fit

Every order from S.S Trading comes with simple care guidance for that specific piece. If something ever needs a repair — a loose stitch, a worked-loose bead, a fraying rope end — bring it back to the shop in Moulvi Bazar and we will take a look.
