Moulvi Bazar is best known as a wholesale trading area in Old Dhaka, and most visitors go there looking for bulk goods rather than a single handmade gift. That reputation is only half the picture. Tucked among the shops are makers and sellers of handmade home decor — and if you know where to look, it is a genuinely good place to buy in person.
This guide is written for a first-time visitor who wants to see and buy handmade pieces, not for a bulk commodity buyer, though the same practical advice applies to both.
What the area is actually like
Moulvi Bazar is a dense cluster of small shops near Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka. It is busy, compact and not especially easy to navigate by car — narrow lanes, foot traffic and closely packed storefronts are the norm rather than the exception. Going on foot, or getting dropped nearby and walking in, is almost always easier than trying to drive to a specific shop number.
Shops here tend to be small and specific rather than large general stores, which is actually useful for a craft buyer: once you find a maker whose work you like, that shop is usually easy to return to and easy to recommend precisely because it has a fixed, findable address.
Why visit in person for handmade pieces
Photos flatten texture, and texture is most of what makes a handmade piece worth buying — the depth of a woven basket, the weight of a bamboo mug, the give in a crochet keychain. Seeing and handling a piece before you buy tells you things a product photo cannot: how tightly something is woven, how securely a keyring or clasp is fixed, whether the colours match what you had in mind.
It is also the fastest way to judge a maker. A shop that is happy to let you look closely at stitching and finish, and that can show you a range of pieces rather than just one sample, is telling you something useful about how it works.
Getting the most out of a visit
- Go during business hours and go early if you can. Old Dhaka gets busier as the day goes on, and an early visit is a calmer one.
- Know roughly what you want before you go. "A gift for a housewarming, natural materials, around this size" gets a much more useful conversation started than browsing without any direction.
- Ask about custom orders. Many handmade pieces can be made in a different colour, size or small variation on request — it is always worth asking rather than assuming what is on display is the only option.
- Call ahead for a specific shop. If you are coming to see a particular maker or shop number, a quick call first means someone can walk you in rather than you hunting for it from the street.
- Bring a sense of the room or occasion it's for. A photo of the space you are decorating, or the person you are buying a gift for, helps a maker recommend the right piece.
Buying for resale or bulk gifting
If you are buying for a shop, an event or a corporate gift order rather than for yourself, the same visit-first principle applies, just at a larger scale. See a sample piece, agree on colours and quantities, and get a clear price and delivery timeline before you commit to a full batch.
